BHA needs to stop trying to be something it is not as far as tournaments go. Reduce the classes back down where there are more competing in each class. Center 12’s are much more fun to the bow hunter who BHA is suppose to be representing. Stop trying to draw in national shooters (which I am one) and focus more on getting the weekend shooter back. Make it simple and fun again.

I agree with Mike. For years we had center 12’s, fewer classes , and a lot of fun. As soon as we started doing things like ASA does them you could tell an immediate change. No one that I heard liked lower 12’s or the outrageous number of classes. The fun factor started to disappear and a more competitive attitude seemed to take over. I guess that’s fine for the few really good shooters that we have but it takes away from the lousy shooters like me who enjoy a little competition but like to have some fun and good fellowship at the same time. We all agreed that we would do things the ASA way for awhile and see how we like it. I’m not against ASA by any means. I’m sitting at the London, Kentucky ASA shoot right now as I write this. BHA just doesn’t have the numbers to be able to operate like ASA and I don’t think we should try.

Right now I am getting the BHA State Championship awards ready for August. Just looking at the 2017 championship there were over 40 classes to give awards to…that is way too many.
BHA agreed to use ASA rules and classes years ago…we have tried that and as Mike and Glen…and many other shooters have told me…there are TOO MANY.
Competition is great, IF you want to compete, but BHA promotes fellowship and introduces new archers to the sport as well as following our tradition of promoting bow hunting, conservation and…competition (if the shooter desires).
We cannot compete with organizations that are “for profit”. We have strayed from our dedication and responsibility to Bowhunters of Alabama, Inc.
A real and thoughtful conversation needs to happen at our last BHA board meeting in August and ALL members should be invited to attend and participate.
BHA is involved in many worthwhile, archery related areas, and it is time to bring our resources together to redefine our goals.
Are we so involved in competition that we have forgotten our real purpose?
BHA is family and I cherish that along with friendly competition…and I can always get serious competition at ASA, and pay for it.
I thank James for beginning this conversation on this website and Facebook. We are getting great responses…keep them coming. We need to make decisions for the future of BHA.
