I think that post like this is a great thing. Having a conversation like this without anyone getting mad, helps generate a better understaanding of what constitutes a scoring ring. Thanks Mike for getting this started and everyone else for their input. BUT……no one has answered my question about a person shooting by himself…….who scores his arrows?

A person should not be allowed to shot by themselves or with just them and a child or any family member for that matter. If you are a single then you need to be prepared to wait until someone shows up or a member of the club can shoot with you.

I agree!!!!!!!!!!
The only way to turn in a score for competition is by shooting with a GROUP. That group needs at least one person that you have not shot with previously. By doing this, ALL doubt is removed.
It is great to shoot with family and friends for a FUN SHOOT, but NOT competition………and I believe that should be applied to BHA Trail Shoots and The Zone SOY competition. Chapter shoots are lax on this. I believe a shooter must let the Chapter know if he or she is shooting SOY and the Chapter rep should put that person in a mixed group.

This is just another gray area, just this past weekend I was shooting with a guy that was going to give me a 12 when my GT XXX pulled the 12 ring line down. I had it changed to a 10, In my opinion if my arrow is not braking the plane of the 12 ring then it’s a 10. However most I think would have scored it a 12. It all comes down to Personal Integrity. I score what you get and if is in the gray take the lower score and try to make it up on the next target.
I agree with your comments totally! However, I too have been faced with this same issue more times than I could tell you! It boils down to, as you said, integrity! It’s of utmost importance that the whole group agrees, and if not, find an official, and let that person “make the call”. The entire motive for the shooter who shoots these large shafts is strictly & solely to “pull those lines”. The way I see it, it either is, or it ain’t! This subject matter is, and always will be THE reason I never call my own arrow! It is also the reason I think that all the shooters in a group should walk to the target & agree on every arrow that is pulled. I realize that in many situations, with steep terrain, it’s not easy for some of us to do that! And, for those who do not walk with the group to the target, for whatever reason, those persons should not complain about how your arrow gets scored! Just sayin’………..
What if a shooter shoots by mimself or with someone who is a novice at scoreing(his son/daughter)?
What we’re dealing with here, again, is integrity. I, as a club officer, would not allow a shooter (who wants his score to count) shoot alone, whether with his son or daughter or not. It’s pretty simple to get someone to shoot with them. Now, if they don’t mind shooting for fun, then fine. As for the “pulling the line” issue, I also have benefited when someone other than myself called my arrow a 12 where the arrow had pulled the line to it. As has been pointed out, the arrow should be scored as it is, without anyone pushing, pulling, or canting, with everyone in the group agreeing. It either is touching, or it’s not! If there is a dispute, without pulling ANYONE’S arrow, a range official should be found, and allow the burden of making the call fall on that person alone!

Like I stated before Integrity, some have it and others don’t. I have shot in groups were integrity was a problem. I have shot with just my son and myself. Like I stated if the shot is to close we take the lower score and move on to the next. Before we shoot we go over the rules he scores me and I score him and if both parties have any integrity then there’s no cheating on scores. My club members and I look at the score cards as they come in and know that integrity is an issue on some. I like the guy that takes the bad score then goes and shoots a 2nd or 3rd round to get the better score. Integrity !!!!! Yes, I have seen parents give their kids a higher score but what are they teaching them? I am not a great shooter and my scores show that. What about the shooters that shoot a 200+ every weekend and are still in the Bowhunter B class. What are waiting for move up!
