Finishing in 16th place at the Buckmasters Top Bow Indoor World Championship last year just gnawed at Skipper Booth.

“I wanted to hold the trophy up and win the World more than anything,” said Booth, 44, of Northport. “But that 16th place last year really made me want to come back.”

Sunday, Booth, who won the Top Bow competition in 2008, made it all the way back to the top and collected the $15,000 first prize.

“It puts you in there with the best of the best,” Booth said. “It’s the most prestigious tournament. There are so few people who have their names on that trophy. To me, it’s not about winning the money. I wanted my name on that trophy again. I wanted to hold it up.”

The competition, held annually during the Buckmasters Expo in Montgomery, is a 3D archery shoot that tests the skills of the world’s best archers. Targets pop up at varying ranges and some even simulate a running deer.

The competition started on Aug. 15 with two pools of qualifiers, 65 shooters total. Competitors accumulated points as they shot. The final four in the qualifiers shot match rounds head to head until there was a winner.

There were 12 qualifiers from each pool for 24 competitors in the World Championship. Plus, three former world champions were provisional qualifiers for a field of 27. The first round cut the field to 12 and the second round winnowed it down to eight. The finals were three rounds of head-to-head match competition.

Winning the World Indoor Championship in 2008 was a game changer for Booth.
“I’m in an elite fraternity that’s won it twice,” Booth said. “There’s only one person who has won it more than twice.”

In addition to the $15,000 first place winnings, Booth picked up $1,000 for winning the qualifier and $750 for having the most cumulative points throughout the weekend. The prize money pushed him over $100,000 in lifetime winnings.

Booth, an active member of the Tuscaloosa County Bowhunters, a chapter of Bowhunters of Alabama, has already shot 30 tournaments this year and he plans to shoot more.

“I’m not ready to put my bow down,” Booth said. “I’m going to Autauga County this weekend and we’ve got our shoot (Tuscaloosa County Bowhunters “Get Ready for Bow Season” Shoot) at the Tuscaloosa Archery Park Sept. 7.”

Yes he is. He took time to shake my 11 year old grandsons hand and he won’t ever forget that.
I won’t either.
Thanks Skipper.
And again Congratulations.
