I’ve been introducing people to archery lately, and have found myself coming across issues that I never had to deal with myself. I am talking to a guy now who is not necessarily brand new to the sport, but he lacks a lot of technical know how.
He’s around 6’4, which gives him quite a bit of draw length. I seem to recall that drawing some types of bows beyond 28″ can be bad for them. What does he need to accommodate his 30+ inch draw length? I’m guessing a bow with a long amo?
Any information would be appreciated.

Usually a bigger man needs a bigger bow…
I would suggest a recurve or longbow 62″ – 64″ or longer. Most trad bows are weighted at 28″ draw. The bow can be drawn past that and about 2-2.5 pounds are added for each inch. I would say, from observing and experience, that few trad archers pull much over 28″… My draw is 29″ and I shoot a 66″ bow at 38#, so I really am pulling over 40#.
Most modern trad bows are built very well. Go for it!

Thanks.
It was a bridge I’d never crossed before. My draw is in the 25 or 26 range. We measured him, and I think he was drawing 29, with the back of his palm around his chin……not enough to anchor, but he wasn’t strong enough to draw it any further.
Thanks for the info. I guess he needs to build up more strength or get a lighter bow.
