I think the biggest thing is that the forum is very active. If anything concerning hunting is happening in this state, you can generally find out about it on the forum because it’s so active. Also, if you post a question on the forum, there is generally no shortage of answers.
Well Said!
ALDEER is one of those sites that you just have to try it for a while. it’s addective as crack cocane.

The layout of the forum is more user friendly. And also much faster than our forum. My computer struggles on our website.
X2, like I said you just have to try it to understand. the web site is huge but I don’t think anybody goes to anything other than the forum. I think the diversity of the site makes it so popular.
Just curious how many of us are ALDEER members? I am HEADSHOT on both sites

Elk hunter on both.
It is a hunting, fishing, trail camera, classified selling, trapping, football, politics, etc….site. Even the DCNR checks it all the time to see what is being said and what folks are thinking.
And the hunting is broken down by deer, turkey, small game, wing shooting, hogs, etc…..
We don’t even have a section just for hunting.

Great points everyone. I knew from the very beginning that the Forum was going to have to have time in order for BHA to make it is own. This Forum is for the members only and should provide tons of help in all types of topics. We can add any topic that anyone wants. Politics…..Wing shooting….Frog Gigging…..Sex (well, better leave that subject out)….just let me know.
I have expanded the Groups and Forum Topics to get more specific in some subjects. I think one of the major problems is that no one is responsible for monitoring and engaging chats in any of these topics. For instance, if you had one person responsible for overseeing one topic and it is the responsiblity to make sure content is being encouraged and posted then more chat would happen. I cannot oversee all of these topics and make sure good content is being posted….I just don’t have the time, but if a person that has expertise in a particular subject area oversees that area then he/she can help post info and help others post. For instance, I have added a Turkey Hunting (either Bow or Shotgun) topic. If Ben Cox is willing to oversee that topic then he can make sure to post good content, help others who have questions, and encourage others to post within that content. Barry Estes is the expert on Hog Hunting and I have added that area. I have added a Women Bowhunters Section and would like to have Sheri Thames take care of that. It does not mean that they are the only ones that can post there…it just means that they will help for their topic to have good content and be a benefit to BHA members.
Which means that this only works if we have members willing to be responsible for topics. You don’t have to post everyday….just whatever what you want to add…news, events, help topics….questions…..surveys,….just anything to build good topic content. I will put the persons name on the header for each topic that wants to lead.
The website and forum is just too big for one person to handle.

Glenn,
I am not sure what to make of your volunteer idea. It’s not a bad idea but I am not sure it is the answer.
I would not worry about getting too detailed with the forum categories. In my opinion simple is better. However, I do like the categories you have out there now.
Can we add a category for game camera pictures and harvest photos? People love to see pictures. And we to encourage our members to post pictures of their harvest and provide some dialog along with it.
If the overhead will allow, can install the software that would automatically resize photos if they exceed our limit. That is a VERY, I said VERY, nice feature and would surely encourage people to post more photos. A lot of people are not going to take the time to resize photos for posting.
We need overall better participation by the members, bottom line. I guess this is stating the obvious.
well, all I can say is that if you want change then do something different. If you want something better find a leader that will make it happen…whether it is conservation, education, fellowship, 3D, website, etc….doesn’t really matter what the area is….you must have a leader leading the change or else stupidity multiples….which is do the same thing over and over and expecting something different.

Glenn, I agree with having good leadership but I am not sure you will get a “leader” for each forum category that is responsible for keeping it alive. It may be good for getting things started but not prolonged use.
Also, we may just have to unlock the BHA membership requirement on the forum except for the executive board stuff. We need traffic on this website, excluding non-BHA members doesn’t help.
Well Kenny, the forum was open to anyone for several years prior to this forum and I saw very little usage in regard to hunting….mainly was used for 3D info and chat. From Sept thru Jan the forum had very little usage…..which is what I am betting that the new one is going to experience if we don’t do something to encourage members to post and be active onit. We are already seeing the decline because there are no more chapter shoots.
So the history is already there showing that opening it up to non-members does nothing to grow the forum or activity on the forum. All you end of doing is giving to non-members what BHA members are paying for: access to hunting experts, education, information, insight, help, comraderie, encouragement, and hunting tips and techniques.
Nothing ever grows without someone helping it grow…For example….I posted a while back that I was looking for a bow and asked what i should be looking for…..wow…got some great info from well experienced members that helped a lot…..I guarantee that I was not the only person interested in getting a bow for 3D. But my question created great insights and content that many can use. With that said…we just need individuals that will help stimulate the conversation and ask provoking questions and etc. If someone posts a picture then ask questions about it instead of just letting it sit there.
I realize that we probably will get few individuals to help grow specific topics but if we can get three starting then that is something…that will encourage others to possibly volunteer….maybe….I will take bowhunting small game.
Also, this forum is less than a year old. Aldeer is way more. It make take 2-3 more years before we build this. I promise you that letting it sit and see if it happens absolutely will not work….it didn’t before in the last forum and it won’t work in this one. A great Forum must be built……that requires direction and action….Success never excludes action…..action never excludes leadership….all you have to do is stand at target 1 at the Championship Shoot with your bow in your hand and arrow in quiver…close your eyes and hit the 12 ring. Without your eye’s (leaders) your actions mean nothing and you will never hit your target. which is success. JMHO
