good tips and advice! Hope everyone out there uses a harness. I work in orthopedic trauma/spine surgery and we have already this year worked on people who have had accidents. Of course we only see the ones who survive a fall.

Speaking as one that didn’t many years ago. I fell 16 ft and broke my left femur. Spent 11 days in the hospital and the next 3.5 months recovering. Folks, that minute you save by not using one is JUST NOT WORTH IT! Wear it and go home safely to your family after each hunt.

I’ve never fallen from my stand, and for most of my life I never used a safety harness due to comfort issues with the early models. Nowadays, though, eventhough some models are quite pricey, comfort issues have been addressed, most company’s harnesses are incredibly light weight! I have one of the Hunter’s Safery System Ultra-light harnesses, and it’s hardly noticeable. I think it’s just a matter of “getting in the habit” of putting it on, and impatience that ultimately get’s someone killed! Suffice it to say, as simple & easy as it is today to just make a safety harness part of your “getting dressed routine”, it borders on insanity not to put one on! And, in the “Pay me now, or Pay me later” category, if you get caught up a tree without one, you’ll wish you’d took the extra 5 seconds to slip one on anyway!

I agree with everything that has been said. I have walked all the way to my tree and then discovered that I forgot my harness. When this happens I decide to either go back and get the harness or I decide to only climb as high as I am willing to fall. I don’t want to fall over 5 feet so that is as high as I climb without a harness and this is not the brightest decision that I could make. But sometimes I am just too lazy to walk all the way back out.

It is best to not forget the harness and to hook up to the tree before your feet ever leave the ground.

IBEP Course offers the chance to put on a FBH fall out of the stand and learn to get back into it. This is nothing that you want to attempt by yourself. There are several Treestand Saftey people in Alabama, we have 3 in the BHA.
The chance to try this in a controled situtation can be a life saver.

they make an add on strap you hook to your harness to let unfold after a fall to put your feet into then adjust just short enough to stand up in for relieving preasure off your legs .Its a must have item that will prevent the buildup of poison or clots from sitting in the harness.

if i take my summit hunting i do have my HSS harness with me my feet don’t leave the ground unless i am wearing my harness i don’t want to see the department that mark works in the physical therapy i do now is enough to remind me why i wear the harness learning to walk again is no fun., that is if you don’t fall on your arrows and bleed to death.use a haul rope to get your bow and or gun up in the stand never climb with them on your back. one fall could be your last.

after watching the tree stand videos i am happy for mike his situation turned out as good, i am glad i took the FAA A&P test I get my license to work on aircraft i took care of many medivac aircraft i got my A&P LIC in 1981 and have worked on helicopters since, so that people in need of emergency help they can get the care they needthe safety harness reminds me of the harness i wore as a huey crewchief we called it a monkey harness. it can save your life that is a first step a long way to the ground that no one wants to take, so wear you safety gear at all times no matter how you think it is uncomfortable or silly it will keep you alive.

thank you Mr. waddel for reminding me of that belt i had forgot that came with my hss harness i also have the video on DVD. i need to watch again, an again.not only does that strap allow you to get the blood flowing again, but it can help you drag the deer ou of the woods.
