I posted this one because it did a great job. There were other articles done in B’ham that totally missed the on the program and actually mislead many. I am afraid there will be alot of hunters showing up just to be turned away because of the misinformation reported by these other channels.

The article in The Tuscaloosa News did not mention anything about BHA OR the restrictions of the hunt.
I think this lack of reporting facts may have bowhunters going to Oak Mt. expecting to hunt…
Is it me, or lack of facts are seriously lacking in the “news” media?

The UDCP has been a great success for BHA and the DCNR.

I agree. The program has been, and continues to be, a success for both the DCNR and BHA.
Through this partnership we have solidified our relationship with the DCNR. Our own by-laws and constitution outlines our purpose. One of those purposes was to work with the Alabama DCNR to better bowhunting and conservation. We are also involved in other education through our involvement with IBEP and NASP. Finally, we are the organization that is fulfilling much of the ideals and purpose that BHA was organized.
Much of this success is due to Barry Estes and Randy Yeargan for their foresight in working with the DCNR. Our continued success is due to the excellant committment of our current leader, Mr. McAlpine.
Through our committment and involvement with the DCNR, BHA fullfills the obligation to it’s members and to all bowhunters in Alabama.

Mike,

I am interested in why you think that they are dissatisfied. All of my conversations with the DCNR have been very positive and to the extent that we may pick up another location or two next season.

Mike, the idea of UDCP is not to kill big inner city bucks that can not be killed otherwise. The UDCP is a management tool used to reduce herd numbers to a healthy level where gun hunting is not a viable option. The Oak Mountain program is a model for how it can/should be done. It has been a success for sure. Last I heard, the doe weights at Oak Mountain had increased by as much as 20-30 pounds( I believe).

Moose,

They have increased by 20-30 and more. I know Mike told me last year they killed lots of mature doe deer over 100 lbs. That is 40-50 lb increase over some that were killed in the early days.

alcon i am sorry if i hit a sore spot, i agree it is another management tool. and is doing well the insurance companies will love it to lessen the deer cars accidents which affects them.Barry i feel it is a great program that is why i took the IBEP COURSE and i still have to take the practical i was hoping to be one of the stated 60 hunter to be allowed to hunt.another case of why i should not open my mouth before i have had a cup of coffee to wake up.

y es it is great and would be sad for some showing up to hunt and get turned away then somebody didn’t go threw the process of getting their permit. out of 11 zones and 60 hunters chosen i can’t see why anyone would get turned away. or i guess i didn’t read the article well enough but it is like said above mis information.lik where i used to hunt on RSA you have to have the hunter safety cousre then ake their course about uxo’s inoder to buy a permit on rsa. i did those. i even have had a fbi background check to get my secret clearance. but that does not affect if you can hunt udcp lands. i have taken the first part of the ibep now i need the practical, and the interview and a applicatiion in oder to be selected plus i need to pay the annual permit. which is no big deal. for some not having the correct information is sad. but the media hasn’t said what is requuired very well and some time like barry said misinformation. i don’t throw rocks in my glass house.

We have had to work real hard over the past several years to make sure that the correct info gets out and to make sure it is open to all that want to participate as long as they follow the rules and requirements. And yes, some still complain. But, I guess that is just life.

It is a great program. And it is a beautiful park. The hunters that get selected are blessed to get to take part in the program and hunt that beautiful hardwood packed park.
