I wanted to give a quick update of the CAB Meeting that was held this past Saturday in Montgomery, AL at the State Capital Auditorium. Regarding hunting of all types the major topic was game check. This was the first year that it was mandatory. The Alabama Conservation and Department of Natural Resources (ACDNR) Wildlife Division estimates that 35%of the hunters that harvested deer reported it by any of the various methods. The majority of the reports came through the App on smartphones. There were a little over 82,000 deer harvested in the 2016-17 season. The breakdown of bucks to does was 45,506 bucks and 36,837 does. This is compared to the 15,138 total deer that were reported in the 2016-16 season, when it was voluntary. Chuck Sykes, Wildlife Director, sees this reporting as a success. He feels that there will be more buy in once hunters realize the benefit that this information gives the ACDNR to make better decisions regarding wildlife. There was also the dog hunting vs no dog hunting that always comes up at the CAB meetings. The board was content with the progress that is being made to make the dog hunting less of an issue around the state. There are no issues at this time that the board is reviewing regarding hunting. Please feel free to contact me with any specific questions that you may have. You can also check out the website Outdoor Alabama for a lot of information regarding what is going on in our state.
