Time for a new “think tank” question…
You have harvested your deer. Now you have to get it back to the truck. Do you field dress the deer or do you drag it “fully loaded”???? If you field dress, where do you put the gut pile??? Would you leave it for predators to find or bury it??? Looking for responses on the “proper” way to handle your game..

Back when we had a place and the means to hang it to dress it — we always brought them out “fully loaded.” Drag it to a trail, throw it on the ATV, drive directly to the cleaning shed — clean it, hang the carcass in the cooler, and dispose of refuse in an “out of the way” corner on the property — left for predators. And go back to hunting. Elapsed time — kill to the cooler … Usually under 30 minutes & rarely as long as an hour. It was a nice setup.
Now that I’m older and no longer have those resources available …. I could be tempted to field dress and lighten the load. But since I don’t have the means to do the final dress out anymore, I use a deer processor. So ultimately, I still don’t field dress it. Drag it or put it on a deer cart to drag it out. Keep the carcass clean as possible — and rush it to the processor. The downside is that by not field dressing it — I can’t get the carcass to cool down as quickly as it could have if I had field dressed it. And that delay increases the risk of spoilage.
If I knew I couldn’t get to the processor in a timely manner — I would field dress it to save the meat as best I could. What to do with the gut pile — depends. Bag it & bring it out could be an option. Leave nothing but tracks behind. No trash, no litter. Leave it as clean or cleaner than you had it when you arrived. Leaving a gut pile in the wrong place is a good way to “not get invited back” to hunt again.
So — while I take my time on the way into the stand ….. I’m hustling on the way out with a kill.

I would never field dress in my hunting area. Drag it out of the area, then I field dress by my truck putting the guts in a bag and into the trash when I get home. Then I put a bag of ice inside the deer to cool it down. I hunt more than two hours from my home and this has worked good for me.

I havent gutted a deer in 15 years. I clean my deer the same day and leave guts in while I quarter and debone. I can then pull the hide back over the carcass and dispose all together. But I also havent had to drag an animal very far. I can usually get my atv right up to my harvest and load. There’s been a many of a time that I would’ve welcomed a 40 pound less load trying to pull a big deer up on the atv by myself.
It takes a special kind of fool to be a deer hunter!

I, like Clete skin and quarter with the guts in at camp. Prefer not to draw predators to my hunting area with a gut pile. It usually doesn’t take long to get the deer on the ATV and back to camp to get the job done. Since we don’t live in a cold enough climate to gut and then hang one up at camp, in the cooler the quarters go on ice until it can get dropped off at the processor. Only once did we have to skin, quarter and pack out the head (with rack), meat out of a hole so deep we couldn’t drag or get close enough with the ATV.
