General post to get your opinion. This is not for public bashing of anyone and will be deleted if it happens to lean that way!
My question to everyone that is a member or visits this website:
What is your definition of “ethics”?
We are an organization built on ethical hunting practices but I would like to expand on the definition of the word itself. What does “ethics” mean to you in your life, hunting and people you meet?

I may be totally wrong, but to me “ethics” is a personal standard of right and wrong which is defined only by each individual person. This can apply to your personal life and convictions, as well as, take for example, your hunting ethics. Me, personally, I would never shoot a small deer (intentionally), and if a doe has babies, I wont shoot her either. These are examples of a couple of my hunting ethics.

Technically it is taking animals according to the BHA Rules of Fair Chase and Alabama Hunting Regulations. Taking an animal within these established rules makes you an “Ethical” hunter, technically . But I try to also have the proper attitude in with I take them which means I don’t KILL for the sake of killing and I use the animal to sustain our lives for our family. I don’t laugh and scream and dance when I kill one or say lets go kill something before going hunting. I try to respect the animal and their environment and be thankful for the privilege of hunting. I don’t kill more than I need (which is generally not a problem anyway). I also try to gain knowledge by reading and studying and also I try to become as proficient with my weapon to the best of my abilities so that I can make a quick and clean kill so the animal does not suffer. I also make sure that my broad-heads are as sharp as they can be so again, to minimize the suffering of the animal. As long as I experience gladness that I was able to successfully take the animal, sadness that he/she died and will no longer roam the forest and thankfulness that they were there to provide food for our family and I have taken the animal in accordance with the established rules and regulations then I feel like I am an ethical hunter.
Those are my personal standards.

I think I have to disagree with the fact that ethic is defined only on a personal level. Ethical behavior is defined/imposed by society as well. Example. The ethical/unethical treatment of an animal. You can certainly be punished for the unethical(as defined by society) treatment of animal even though it may not have met your personal definition of being unethical.

Thanks for the responses. But let’s expand more on the definition. Go beyond the hunting/harvesting aspects but what does “ethics” mean to you?
I agree with something out of every post that has been made so far. I agree that it is personal as well as society driven. It is also deemed by the laws of God and the laws of man. What it boils down to for me is the difference between right and wrong. Each situation may (and probably does) have a different ethical standpoint and it can be said that time and place has a lot to do with ethics for every individual.
Dictionary.com defines ethics as .
1. ( used with a singular or plural verb ) a system of moral principles: the ethics of a culture.
2. the rules of conduct recognized in respect to a particular class of human actions or a particular group, culture, etc.: medical ethics; Christian ethics.
3. moral principles, as of an individual: His ethics forbade betrayal of a confidence.
4. ( usually used with a singular verb ) that branch of philosophy dealing with values relating to human conduct, with respect to the rightness and wrongness of certain actions and to the goodness and badness of the motives and ends of such actions.
