Safety harness

Saw this on the Mathews forum.   I couldn’t tell where the OP was from — but some respondents noted the impact of ice on the functioning of the knot.

If your harness uses a prussic knot, you might want to think about throwing a knot in the safety line as a last ditch stop.

One manufacturer, Summit, actually includes that step in its instructions.

Note: This assumes you are using a standard safety rope. If you are using a full length rope from the stand to the ground, Summit doesn’t include that precaution.

This an unbelievable deer hunting story, but not about getting a deer.
Yesterday morning I was going to hunt from my tree stand. I just got in the stand 20 feet off the ground and stepped to grab the rope to pull up my bow. However, it was dark there was nothing to step on and I rolled out of the stand. I wear a safety harness but the prussic knot did not grab. I sailed the whole 20 feet, all the way to the ground and landed on my back. As I was falling I kept waiting for the harness to grab. All I saw was the stand getting farther away. Then I hit and couldn’t believe I just fell out of my stand. After a quick parts check, I walked back to the house and went to the ER. I broke 2 ribs and that was it. My season is pretty much over, but I walked away from a fall that I should not have walked away from. I am very lucky. I still can’t believe I survived the fall. Devine intervention? I believe so.

My tip: Check your safety equipment and make sure the prussic knot is holding as you climb if you use this type of safety rope! This happened so quick.

Anyway, have a great Thanksgiving! I certainly am thankful that I bounce really good.

Be safe and take care.

I think that it is a good idea to use a safety knot below the prusik knot. Also the prusik knot will work better if it is set before it is loaded. I have started using an Icicle knot as the friction knot because the icicle knot is much easier to get to release after it is hard loaded. I am no expert but I think that all friction knots should be tested a couple of feet off the ground just to be sure that they are working correctly and that you can get the knot to release when needed.

that is another reason to wear your safety harness, to help you get the deer out of the woods, i am sure Mark would agree, and lessen his work load some :)

Thank You for this post on the prussic knot! I quit carrying my Hunter Safety Systems “PRO SERIES” safety vest into the woods with me and started using the safety harness that came with my SUMMIT 180* climbing stand. I have been gun hunting over here in Walker Co., GA. (TROPHY HUNTING)- NO KILLS! Our deer season is over in the northern zone of Ga. but all that means is I will get to start shooting my TOURNAMENT BOW! I enjoy reading the post on the BHA Website. My first love is 3D-Archery. I’m still searching for the magic formula to estimate EXACT YARDAGE to the 12 ring. I plan on shooting BHA Tournaments. in the northern zone this year. My class is Senior Open

i found my dvd and got some head phones so i can hear what they had to say, i remember most of my straps are still in my pro series harness/vest.watching the guy fall and hearing him take his last breath is an eye opener, there is no excuse for not wearing your safety gear.so that you don’t lose your life and your family don’t lose you for life. think on it the seconds you save putting the harness is the seconds that can keep you alive.it is like the monkey harness us crewchiefs used in the army helicopters i wear it, so i don’t feel naked. i don’t want to make that step my last step.when i get into my jeep the first thing i do before starting the engine i put my seat belton, you should do the same with the safety harness/vest i have so far, but i have not climbed a tree since 2011,i wore it then i want to buy a tree spider descent system, so that if i fall out it wil lower me to the ground slowly/safely.i need to get a lifeline.i know that stuff is a lot of extra weight to carry in, but it can, and will keep you safe if you use it. so that your family can see your smiling face at night, sothat your kids have a dad.Wink
