I agree with making a speed change since the market out there is for the fastest speed available. I also agree with Kevin that speed and accuracy don’t necessarily go hand in hand. The other organizations have bumped up there speed limits so I say stick with ASA rules since they’re more predominant here in the south. Also, if you want to have a no speed limit class, put those shooters in Unlimited and let them shoot from the 50 yard stake.
We, as an organization, try to spread Archery to the masses. Most of the masses, the other 95% of Alabama Archery Hunters that don’t go to 3D shoots, purchase the fastest bows on the current market. When they do show up at our events, we have to tell them that they can’t compete because their bow is too fast. Not everyone can afford to buy multiple bows just to hunt and/or compete. There’s as many Pro’s as Con’s to this discussion and I’m looking forward to hearing more input as this thread goes along.
Peace!!!!

The bow market is making faster bows. Many bowhunters are not interested in Slowing their bow down to shoot 3D. So, we need to adapt. We also need to embrace KD. I know we are not ASA but dang it we should do what works. Last year their top 4 classes were all or half KD. Those classes averaged over 100 shooters per class. Just think how many Alabama bowhunters we are missing.
Why can’t we do this? Set the rule to state, “BHA’s speed limit is the higher of the ASA or IBO speed limits each year. That way we never exclude any 3D shooter from another org.
Also, create some KN classes. The shooters have to police themselves anyway. Let’s get over all the old arguements and grow.

“Different strokes for different folks….” I like a challenge, so I prefer unknown yardage! If the challenge makes one shy away from shooting at a BHA shoot, then why not have KD, and have those folks shoot together! Bottom line: If it gets more folks out to shoot, then let’s accommodate! As far as speed is concerned, bring on the bullet bows! They still have to “make the shot”! Heck! Put ’em my group! I enjoy watching people having a good time! Ain’t that what it’s all about??

About the only way to have a KD class is for all tournaments to be shotgun starts so that all KD shooters would be in the same group. Keep’em coming. It’s interesting to hear all the different views.

I disagree. Why does everyone think KD shooters have to shoot together? It will never work at the local level if we make KD shooters shoot together. Mix them in with everyone else. If you are worried about cheating, it is no different than people cheating with the current rules.

Correct!
Let the group police itself. That is what is supposed to happen anyway.

I talked to several bowhunters yesterday down at the club. Every one of them have their hunting setup shooting over 300. Most over 310. I simply think we are blocking a large segment of the bowhunting population from shooting 3D. I know I know…they could change. But, why should they have to do so. Isn’t one of the biggest reasons we shoot 3D is for practice?

Ok, I wasn’t gonna put my 2 bits in, but I just couldn’t help myself!!! I have an older, slow bow, but I think that we all should be able to shoot our bows without having to be able to make any adjustments as far as speed is concerned. Shoot what you hunt with! It’s all about practice and fun anyway. When I am able to get a new bow, I do not want to change my “hunting set up” to shoot 3D.

Oh, by the way….. My husband went with me to the last Covington shoot. I asked him why he don’t just shoot with me, and he said that his bow is to fast….. so there ya go. Something to consider………
Sheri, He can always just tell them he is shooting for fun!! You just won’t be eligible for prizes.
