Cullman had a banner weekend! 113 shooters showed up for the Cullman shoot in the Northern Zone. Congratulations to the Northern Zone shooters and participants that support your Chapters!!
Please share the secret to lighting a fire under your members to support your Zone.
The Central Zone Chapter pulled, probably, less than half of your numbers…and that is a pitiful showing for Central Zone Chapters that don’t support the Chapters in their own Zone.
Marshall County will have their shoot this weekend and I know the faithful Northern Zone Chapter members will turn out, as usual, and make it a great competitive shoot with a large number of shooters…and SUPPORTERS.
North Pickens County will also have their shoot this weekend. I challenge all the Central Zone Chapter members to be at this shoot…and post over a hundred shooters! I see MANY Central Zone shooters at each Central Zone Chapter shoot that I attend…and I attend ALL of them…but, I miss seeing those same faces at other Chapter shoots.
Chapters SURVIVE and THRIVE …ONLY if you attend their shoots. The Northern Zone Chapters have that figured out. Maybe Central Zone Chapter members need to take lessons from them!!
Congratulations, Cullman guys and gals…and to the Northern Zone! You have the key to growth!

Larry, don’t bash my zone too hard. Wink Chilton had their best shoot in years a few weeks ago and Autauga had one of their best trail shoots ever. Fayette did a fine job this weekend but caught a weekend when Cullman was an ASA qualifier and there was an ASA shoot in Phenix City. Unfortunately, Many people in this state place ASA above BHA.

Our central zone will rebound this weekend with Pickens and then Shelby the following weekend.

The Central Zone is as good as it’s been in a long time with new chapters in Fayette, Talladega and St. Clair. We are off to a great start and I expect a banner year for the central zone.

Thanks Larry,
we did have a good turnout this weekend almost 25% of our shooters were 16 Years old and under. We had twenty something first time shooters. the ASA qualifier only pulled in fifteen people over half of them were young shooters that just want to shoot in the classic. As for the BHA faithfull we only had four that signed up for the qualifier and those four are the ones that come to all the North Zone shoots. We tryied to count all that didn’t show up because of the ASA shoot and that number got as high as 42 people that shoot almost every weekend.
The Key to Success is having a good core group that will go out and advertise. The group I have in Cullman County now is a hard working group of people that Strive to put on the very best archery tournament that we possibly can. two weeks ago i had nine people helping set the range. Friday i had three that took off work becouse they heard that the range had issues from a animal chewing up some targets. normally a club will have just a few members that do everything we at cullman have a Core Group of about Six to Ten that will be there at any time I need them. For Goodness Sakes our Vise presidents Father-n-law died saturday and Jason still worked the shoot all day sunday. Not all of Our Members are well known to all of the North Zone Family Yet! But we have had at least five and sometimes Twenty members at Each North Zone Event. At the our meeting in December i told the group i would not be able to make all the shoots this year and that They would need to represent Cullman County At each of the North Zone shoots And they have! THANKS GUYS!
I say that only to say this! The key to sucess is having a network of friends thoughout the Zone that wont to help each other grow. the North Zone in general has i guess about 50 people that love archery and the fellowship that comes with it. this Core group is the back bone of North Zone BHA. with such a good Core it only takes a little bit of advertizing to get the numbers up.
Thanks North Zone
Scottie

I would go to some of the Central Zone shoots if gas prices weren’t so freak’n high! I would like to see the Southern Zone more active in BHA. Maybe to many of us fish down south. : – /

CARPOOL is the answer, Sheri. Tuscaloosa folks carpool. Alex City folks come in a BUS.
Thanks for the post, Scottie. Passionate folks that love archery and jump in to help….that’s the key!

New to bha and Alabama would be nice to know what
Shoots are in my zone and how to get there. My wife and I are looking forward to going and meeting new folks. We are from Alex city and need some help on where else to go for a shoot.

On the home page, look on right hand side of the page and you will see upcoming events. If you click on one it will give info about the events. I think most chapters have provided directions. Also, click on the Calendar tab at the top of any page. Hope that helps.

My I phone does not show that. If I look at the calendar it shows where but if I try to open a link from there nothing happens.

“Build it and they will come” only works in the movies.
But that is apparently what the BHA and Chapters believes. I have seen basically no shoot or chapter promoting going on except for some that Larry McAfee has done. His CAR POOL solution to high gas prices is great! Maybe nobody shows up because they don’t know you are even having a shoot….just saying.

If you have an event you should spend at least 10 times the amount of time marketing and promoting it as you do in preparing for the event if you want a good turnout. How? First of all try to make your event unique and fun so that they will want to come back again and it also gives you some uniqueness to promote about your event. “Boring” is not an attraction. Help make it a great experience EVERYTIME. “Bring a new shooter and get you and your friends lunch for free!” Tons of ideas out there.

Second, shout about it loud and often weeks before the event happens. Waiting two days before the event to start promoting is total waste of time. Most people have already made plans. You will just be to late…Lost Revenue Simply Because You Can’t Plan. That does not mean that you start making your promotion materials three ahead. It means that you have your materials/handouts, etc done so you will START promoting three weeks before the event. Start promoting your event about 3 weeks in advance. If you don’t have the capability to create handouts and graphic posts then let me know. I can make them for you. All you have to do is ask. It would help if you would get someone to take pictures at your event so that you can have them available to use in promotion materials next year. I have been shooting still and video wherever I shoot to give me something to use to post on forum, Facebook and Twitter. It really comes in handy.

Where: Post a note and flyer on BHA Forum. Post on Facebook. Post on Twitter…Post a flyer at the local sporting goods or archery shop…Post on your Chapter website. If you don’t have any of these then you have then set them up!!!! You have to have avenues to market….not just one….MANY!……..Yes, I very well know it takes time to manage each of these but they are tools to help you market your chapter and event. I can help you setup any of these that you want. I am currently building websites for Heritage, Cullman, and Morgan County Bowhunters. They are necessary this day and time to have them and manage them to help build your chapters and BHA and get the word out. If you don’t have time to manage them then delegate it to someone else. I have turned in a two-year plan to Mark Proctor for the BHA website and part of that is helping get ALL of the chapters a website so that we can promote BHA, the Chapters and all of the many events that happen. If you think it is work then you are right! but it is very necessary. If you are sitting and wondering why your chapter is not growing or your event is not successfull it is because you are not marketing either! The GOLDEN RULE of Small Business…..Growth and Success STOPS when MARKETING STOPS! If you don’t want to market your chapter or event then RESIGN! You are a roadblock for the growth and success of your organization. Marketing has to happen in some form or fashion everyday. All year long. Every month…

PLEEZ put some effort in to making your chapter or event successful..just setting up the targets is simply not enough….I am willing to help you promote and build Chapters in any way I can as I perform the BHA marketing activities. Chapter growth is ESSENTIAL in the growth and strength of BHA. BHA can NEVER grow to what it can be without the success of Chapters. More about “Chapters Growth and Vitality’ in another post…..

Amen Glenn! I have been saying the same thing at our Chapter meeting just last night. We are planning a Hog Classic coming up in April. We plan on pulling out all the stops to get back to the Ole Days of really doing a shoot up right. We plan on making everyone feel at home with uniqueness! We are ordering Trophies in the shape of a hog and the Winners will be BOSS HOG!

Ahh…if you post a baited line, you will get a bite…or a big’un!!Laugh
Great post, Glenn.
Several years ago, I had my class develop a program for all the Chapters. We gave a CD and hard copies for each Chapter to use including logos, ideas about promotion, advertising and public relations. Included local archery shops and newspaper contacts. Some made use of the material, some did not.
Bottom line…If you want people to attend your shoots, you have to let them KNOW about them!
Tuscaloosa will have their first shoot at our new archery park on April 6 and 7. All Tuscaloosa NASP instructors will get an invitation to bring their classes. The newspaper will carry an announcement the week prior. All archery shops will have notices posted about the shoot. Coordination between our Chapter and the PARA (Parks and Recreation) will be implimented.
While I have your attention…DON”T FORGET TO COME TO THE NORTH PICKENS SHOOT THIS WEEKEND!!!!…AND BRING A CARLOAD!!!!Wink

Glenn said it in his post. He is willing to build EVERY chapter their own website for free! This will then only cost the chapter a measly $15 a year to keep the domain name. What better way these days to let the world know what you’re doing. I am asking that every chapter contact him for this IMPORTANT tool. DO IT NOW!!!!!!

I guess I have a less optimistic opinion. I would personally like to see us get this sight where it needs to be before we venture off into creating every chapter a website. I just don’t think these chapter websites will produce the traffic you think they will. True, a few of the larger chapters may do well with their website but most will not. These chapters have 2 shoots per year, What else are they going to do on the website the other 361 days of the year? If a chapter wants to take on a website and make it work to promote archery in their area, I am all for it. I just don’t think it will work for a majority. Sorry to sound like such a “glass half empty guy” but it just my opinion of what the reality will be.

Thanks to Glenn for offering this service!

Kenny, I am not sure what you mean by getting this site where it needs to be? What would you liket to see different? Be specific pleez. Not taking your comment the wrong way but I need to know what people want to see in the website. It will probably be Aug 2014 before I finish what I am doing and getting everything I have envisioned installed. Luckily, knock on wood, the forum seems to be working without crashing. I have already turned in a two year plan to Mark which includes getting websites up. I cannot create these overnight but I can create them and get the clubs gathering information to populate their site with. If they want to grow we need to help them grow.

As far as the chapter sites….right now they are getting zero attention to their chpater….continuing to do nothing will not yield better results. I have already been contacted by clubs that are tired of not doing anything or growing. There are many reasons for it but many just do not know what to do. As far as what I can do for them is only one part. They shoudl also be working with their Zone Directors to help them if they ask……I am assuming they probably have not asked. This means you as Zone Director cannot help since you don’t know.

I do know that many clubs never have a meeting once a year. Few has two or three. I supposedly belong to Madison County chapter but the officers do not want to meet. They don’t want to deal with politics. I know that comment will stir up trouble but there are a lot of clubs that have members that want to grow but leadership don’t want to. It takes individuals that will make a commitment to participate in growing a chapter. It is Fricken’ HARD WORK to buidl and maintain a successful chapter. Many simply don’t have the time because of home and work requirements….That is perfectly fine. Some just have more time or really enjoy it and they put a little more effort into it. Yes, politics seem to follow simply because you can’t please everyone. If it was up to me I would terminate the membership of anyone that wants to cause trouble and not come in to the organization with a positive attidude and willingness to help. Life is too short to mess around with trouble makers. I would do it at state level too. LOL

No bowhunting education is going on at the chapter level much less the state level. If I am wrong please let me know cause I know a lot of people have joined BHA and their chapter to learn abut bowhunting.. A ton of education could be going on which would help clubs grow. People don’t want to be a member of something that does nothing. The join to gain benefits. about 20% are willing to work while 80% just want to attend and gain knowledge. That is the way organizations (including churches) are made up. Mostly in our world they join to gain hunting and archery experience. Not to give BHA $15.

Well, i could go on and on but I better shut my mouth now. I was going to write about chapters in another topic but I could not help my self. Yes, Kenny the traffic may be low but when you multiply it by 20 or so chapters it will help not only BHA but also the Chapters. It will take place over time. It is not going to make an immediate difference but if you want a great membership base in 2015 then you had better start working right now. We have 70,000 potential alabama bowhunters that we have reach and covince to become member of the state and local levels. The question they will ask is “Why should I join BHA or XYZ Chapter?”

Glenn,

I apologize. I didn’t mean for my comments to sound like the site is bad and not working. You are doing a great job. What I meant was the traffic on this site needs to be heavy and year round. It honestly needs to be more like ALDEER. This is a bowhunting organization and this is a bowhunting website but the ONLY time there is traffic is during 3D season. It is dead during hunting season. That is crazy! Look at the topics we are discussing now. There are some good topics but yet it is the same 5-10 of us that comment on everything. Hardly an active forum when you have 70,000 potential bowhunters as you said. Look at the classified section. It’s dead! Classified sections can be huge draw for a website. Ours has always been worthless over the years. This is what I am talking about. We can’t even get traffic up on this site, THE MOTHERSHIP! Why do we think 20+ other websites will do any better??? Like I said though, I am sure there will be a few chapters that can make good use of a chapter website but at this point I am personally worried more about this site right now. This is not a knock against you at all. I thank you for your hard work and willingness to listen to ideas.
