I have been shooting in BHA events since the late 70’s! I have seen the evolution of BHA, many of you will remember the running targets, the eathafoam targets that if it came a slight drizzle the target would not stop you arrow, you could even shoot 3 arrows at a target, and I always hated the GAP for that was most of the time were I was, and a archery trail could be 2 miles long! I would like opinions on what you believe is the state of BHA now! From my understanding BHA was formed to give the average JOE a way to better their skills for hunting! Personally I believe we have gotten away from the mission of BHA! I believe BHA now has 16 categories that you can shoot in WHY? Is it to help in giving Participation Awards? I am sitting and watching BHA as they are getting watered down by the Participation people! For instance RANGE FINDERS, the use of them is laughable and should only be used in the Unlimited group, even they could have a no range finder class! If you are a ok shooter and you think a RF will help you win, your scores will get better and so will the top shooters in your class! I feel what has happen is BHA it is turning into the ASA! Because so many shooters are shooting ASA, BHA changed our mission! I have heard their (ASA) shooters complaints, well I have to buy 2 bows, one for ASA and one for Hunting and BHA! I feel the reason we are losing archery clubs here in Alabama is, it takes so much for a club to put on and keep up with everything that it is just not worth the effort anymore! It is going to get worse for the Clubs to exist in the State because of State owned Archery Parks! People will leave the clubs because they can go and shoot a State range without the work of helping to set up a range! Here at our club we have around 70 members and there are only like 5 that will work and set up the range! I have heard this at every range I go to, that has noting really to do with BHA, there will always be people that want to reap the rewards of other peoples labor!
What is your opinion, and what do you feel BHA should do to help it get better?

The BHA is open to all who enjoy archery there is a class for everyone and every shooting skill
The statement you have made reminded me of a few so called bowhunters I know
They always say I don’t worry about hitting a small dot on a 3D target I am a bowhunter! To me that’s so odd when we hit the field to hunt and hope to harvest an animal isn’t that when hitting a small dot on a target really important.
It’s the change and the open minded thinking that has not only kept the BHA running but also to grow it to where it is today

I have only been in BHA stuff for about 4 years or so. This is just my take on things and nothing else. I personally dont give a crap about what rules are used or whether its asa scoring rings or ibo centers. If a club is having a shoot and i can make it i will go and shoot under those rules except if range finders are not allowed. I cant judge yardage. Thats my issue no one elses so just my two cents on RF.
I am a hunter but never viewed this as a hunting platform for honing skills because i hunt 30 ft up a tree not standing on the ground. Im sure some do and thats fine. I have not seen any posts promoting any seminars or classes etc on hunter safety or promoting hunting on any regular basis since i have been using the website. They may be and we just dont see it but i would love to see these things posted. It should be posted so it can be promoted in the communities. That said this is more of a 3d thing which i personally am ok with. No reason you cant do both.
So i look at it like a menu. Do you want to go into a place that has three words on the menu (breakfast lunch dinner) or do you want options. I personally want options and i dont care if it is called bha or asa or something else.
I go not because i want to win something because im not going to at bha or asa. I go for the love of shooting and the atmosphere it provides. The only thing i am trying to beat is my personal best score. I could not care less about what anyone else shoots.
I think there is more to it than asa vs bha and classes and how many there are. I personally think people’s priorities change. The economy is in the toilet and everything is going up but wages. Other things take priority. Life is happening and it dont include archery for many people.
i dont have issue with range finders. Some are very good at judging yardage. I am not so good at it and as a hunter I owe it to the animal to make the best ethical shot i can make. Doesnt always workout like i want even with a range finder but why not use every legal tool you can to minimize those things. If they outlaw range finders then i will just wait for asa to come around or go somewhere else. GA has some shoots that are in driving distance. Should it just be all trad and no sights at all? Im sure some would like it and some wont. How many stakes are enough? Less targets? One day shoot? No food or drink to minimize impact on the club? If it is truley about hunting then nothing but hunting bows and hunting arrows? No fat arrows, scopes, lens, long stabs, etc. make it truley hunting setup and nothjng else legal to shoot with. I dont really want answers to these questions. Just things to think about.
I dont think there is anything that will change it much. It may for a short time but long term is a different story. Life changes things for people everyday.
Any who want to change things for next year gather your masses and go to the board meeting and voice your wishes. See what shakes out. I will shoot anywhere i can as long as i can use my range finderLaugh

I started shooting BHA back in the late 80’s early 90’s when you only had three stakes. Women, traditional and bare bow shot from the closest stake, the pin shooters shot from the next stake and open class shot from the farthest stake. The southern zone was big back then but now all the old clubs have closed down. Why I don’t know. It sure wasn’t because of rangefinders because we didn’t have them back then. I also don’t think that it has anything to do with our current clubs struggles to stay open. I also don’t go to shoots to better my hunting skills I can do that in the back yard. I go for the competition. And since my eyesight isn’t what it use to be I use a rangefinder and I like it. It does make it easier to shoot higher scores but also makes it harder to win. Plain and simple I like to win. And with that being said I think that the central zones participation award also known as central zone soy is hurting attendance. Back when it was a competition I would make it a point to go to each club at least once and if I could I would go back and try to better my first score. Since I work two weekends each month It’s pointless to drive 3.5 hours to shoot in central zone when I can drive 1.5 hours to Mississippi or a south zone club. It use to be awarded to the best in each class. How can you call yourself Shooter of the Year and you didn’t win a single tournament. I wish I knew how to improve participation in BHA but I don’t. I don’t think that cutting classes or certain equipment will help. Just my two cents.

Thank you all for your comments on this. The Board meeting is next weekend on Saturday in Clanton at the Holiday Inn Express. It will start at 8 am. Anyone is welcome to attend. I am sure we can address and answer any and all questions. If you want changes for next year, your proposals will need to be written up and presented before the start of the Board meeting and then they will be table to be voted on in August.

Do you shoot targets 11-20 unknown as well or do use a rangefinder in Senior Hunter class, for second half of range?

I would like to thank all of you for your participation your participation trophies will be forth coming! I would also like to take this time to apologize to those that feel a fended in some way about this post! It was somewhat an experiment to show how each of us take offense to a statement or a challenge! To Scott, I am glad you like to WIN and I am glad that a range finder can help you do that, Good for you! To the Captain, I guess with that question is like the Left saying that Russia influenced the election of Trump! The answer to your question is “yes”! but not in the way you do evidently! I will use it sometime just to check my yardage It makes no difference to me because out to 40 yards I am normally withing a yard or two! And since you ask it, my opinion on that, is a range finder should be used on the first half! Why you ask? Because you can use it to see how bad your judgement is off on the first half, then you should be set to judge the second half! Makes no difference to me, I won State Championship before range finders and I have won them after! And to John, You get The First Place Award for Participation! Actually the point of this whole thing I was seeking input on all the classes there are now! I also had this thought while doing this! Why doesn’t BHA help establish or help a club start up in some way? Use some of the BHA money to help the Sport of Archery get bigger by helping a club get started! Don’t get me wrong BHA is a very good organization but it can always get better! Personally I think it has gotten into the mold of our Law Makers, if we are not passing rules or Laws, we are not doing anything! Hug a Police, Firefighter, or a Military person today and tell them thank you!

I shoot an all unknown fixed pin class was the reason I asked. If you would like to leave your RANGE FINDER at home, I’m shooting Autauga Sunday. We can shoot dollar a point? I’ll even wear my Russian underoos

Thank you all. Kevin I don’t think anyone should have been offended by your questions. Without questions from members/shooters we cannot improve or grow. I welcome all civil banter on posts and again thank you for bringing this topic up. I hope you will come to the Board meeting so everyone can hear your thoughts and maybe we can help move this organization forward together.

Thanks again.
Charmen

So glad Kevin posted his first one.
Personally, I would like to see archery expanded and more assorted. Years ago, in Gadsden, when BHA was young, we all shot Field Archery (4 arrows each at 28 targets). We also had an American Round at the Trade School (Olympic targets at 40, 50 and 60 yards). This was fun archery. The main POSITIVE element was that the American Round was in a place there the PUBLIC could see the archers. Today, we do most of our shooting in secluded wooded areas where no one can see us, get involved and “get the archery bug”. WE NEED TO BE MORE PUBLIC to spark interest in our sport. We are not on TV like other sports. We need TO BE SEEN.
3-D archery took over and everything else went to the curb. We have lost many shooters because we have not been flexible and tried NEW things…in PUBLIC.
This year I went back to shooting my recurve for this year and it has restored my real love of archery.
It seems like every time a new gadget comes out we have to add another “Class” to accommodate it. There were very few classes for Field Archery and everyone was happy with the simplicity.
Variety is the spice of life. Archery shoots can be the same.
More public shoots are needed to display archery to the public. Some of the TV and movies have breathed new life into the sport, but we ( BHA ) has not taken advantage of the newfound interest.
BHA is a bowHUNTING organization but we get year long interest in archery by having competition.
Let’s hear some more ideas to move BHA ahead!

Hello Charmen, I have just enough time, if the shoot is within an hours drive of Alex City to shoot and get back to town so I can get ready to go to work at 130pm so I can protect the public! Thanks for the invite! To my good buddy Larry, I have posted a few thing on the BHA site, when we had handles or nick names I was 2thaNock! lol, we could have chatted about this when we talked Saturday Morning, Now I know why you had such a big smile on your face when we shook hands Saturday! My message I feel did get lost in translation because people jumped on the range finder part of it! My post was about all the classes that BHA has now! I will use Autuga Co shoot as the example because they have a good turn out:
There are now 26 Classes: of those classes
(9) classes had only one (1) shooter in it:
(4) classes had only two (2) shooters:
(4) classes had only three (3) Shooters
That was 29 shooters for 17 classes. that is an average of 2.2 people for those 17 classes!
Leaving only nine (9) classes that had four (4) or more shooting in them!
This is why I made the comment about the Participation Awards!
My Old Pappy had this saying: IF WINNING WAS EASY THE LOSERS COULD DO IT! Heck if it was easy even Auburn could do it! lol Larry I know you will have some fun with that one! We sure are making it easy!

Good post, Kevin.
…ps…I always have a smile on my face because I love archery and the wonderful folks in BHA!!

Too many classes! Separating people into that many classes insurers more winners but it’s like kissing your sister… really no big deal.
Guess that is why I like the Trad…three classes (primitive, longbow and recurve)…and it is not about the trophy or award, it’s about besting the other guy and improving your shooting…..and having fun doing it.

I still shoot compound but try to apply the same principle. Shot a second fun round with my compound for the second time this year and shot 192…and had a great time!

Looking forward to Talladega!!

I have to ask for the ones that have been in BHA for more than 5 years to be silent for a bit. I have not been on the site for a while and, This is me Bobby Ingram saying this. I don’t care what you shoot or who you shoot with or from what stake you shoot it from. I know that we have voted as BHA to accept and follow the rules of ASA. For that reason I can understand. If you like to shoot and have fun or practice for any ASA or IBO or any other organization that you choose to shoot for. Come on out and shoot and have fun. This is just a small part of what BHA was founded on. But BHA has been around much longer than most of the others have been. We were founded for other reasons too. BHA has been around sense the 60’s and there were so many, one way or the other to attend or not. BUT… BHA is a ALABAMA organization and we would love to have you come shoot with us. We have many chapters around the state if we don’t have one in your area, by all means step up to the plate and see just what it takes to run a Statewide Organization. We would love to see new faces and meet the new up and coming leaders. If that’s not your cup of tea, that’s fine too. Shoot what you and your equipment allows you to shoot in that class. Just remember OUR leaders are donating their time and money or loss of, to do what they love and want to see continue till time has stopped. I shoot anything with a stick and string. I have shot ASA’s, IBO’s and Trad shoots. It don’t matter where or with who. Shoot and have fun.

But remember what BHA is…

BHA Mission
The purpose of the Bowhunters of Alabama shall be to foster, expand and perpetuate the proper use of the bow and arrow in hunting all legal game and fish, the spirit of good fellowship among all bow hunters, cooperation between all chapters of the organization, the knowledge and adherence to all game laws and cooperation with all conservation organizations in the conservation of game, fish, water and hunting lands.

The facts are that adult numbers are down period. This downward trend started when ASA rules and Classes were installed instead of fine tuning the existing rules to work better. With that said, ASA rules and Classes are two separate items. Through the years, ASA has fine tuned their rules to be fair and the classes to accommodate the amount of shooters they have at each event. Most classes in ASA will have more shooters than an entire BHA shoot.
BHA could combine classes, allowing shooters to still use their ASA setup, and distances.
Example. One Hunter B, One Hunter A, One Known, One Open.
Have some close and some over between 30-40 classes and 45-50 classes
Do the same for the women.
All Pros shoot together.
Leave the kids and youth alone. They are holding their on right now.

In my opinion, this would help bring back the hunter classes that paid the bills for clubs for many years.

Here is one example.
North Jeffereson shoot May 2013

If BHA could get back to these numbers with the kids and youth, well it would exciting.

Something to think about.

So does the money made from these shoots go towards holding seminars on archery /bow hunting around Alabama? Does it go to lease land for more bow hunting opportunities for youth, people new to the sport? Where does the $15 a head from 75-150 shooters a weekend go? I ask, not to be a horses butt, but out of honest curiousity. I realize there is target repair for clubs, but I also know the cost of cores.

While I stand by my original post, it was not about range finders per se and no one jumped on them, range finders were mentioned by the starter of this thread calling them laughable. Then those of us who did what was asked, which was to simply provide our take on the state of BHA today, were then chastised for posting our thoughts by being thanked for participating and that our participation trophies were on the way or something like that. If range finders were not in question then why even bring them up to begin with? I guess some just don’t know how to parse the English language or say what they really mean. So I guess my take now is that if you post your thoughts when asked to do so, it’s taken the wrong way and that one will only get mocked for doing what was asked in the first place.

The point of the post was not missed as most stated they did not care about how many classes there are that we can shoot because of our love for archery and competition. The competition for me is only with myself. The numbers were on the decline well before changing to ASA rules, period. I watched it when I started. Those folks were on the way out already.

Now let’s see if the classes get changed back, who has the guts to come call out the classes that only have 1 to 2 shooters and say they need to be done away with.
Better example from June 2013 at the Central Zone CHAMPIONSHIP!

http://archerytalk.com/vb/show…..?t=2034598

I will not shoot anymore at BHA.

Well Captain, glad you asked… Back about 10 or so years ago. There were many chapters in the state that was promoting BHA. Membership drives, Money shoot’s. Membership’s were great, always working for sponsorship’s having fun shooting, We and many other chapters use to show up at a shoot with several vehicles, 8 to 12 folks pour out and it made for GREAT fun. Clubs supporting each other shoots would have 200 show up. So here’s the biggie…. Where doe’s BHA stand right now folks may ask…This is my opinion and my opinion only. How many folks do you see out there working or running for office and helping each other and chapters supporting other chapters? When someone runs for office, They pretty much have a bulls-eye on them. There is No real support from most out there. They expect the leaders to do most of everything. What makes me say that some may ask. Been there-Done that. I’ve seen it. Sad to say. I have seen many Great leaders in the past lead with support from the organization. But this is nothing new, but it can change. Folks fought for years about rules, wanting to adopt ASA or IBO rules. That’s all fine I enjoy shooting Trad from what use to be the Red stake 50 yard max. I would love nothing more than to show up shoot with new or old members and have a blast. But everyone will have to get on the same page. Why and How is the question, can WE do that again? I hear about changes from folks at the past meeting that want to change the way that this organization was founded on. Most of them have not even been in BHA much more than 2 or 3 years. They probable can’t even tell you what or when on anything about BHA. Trying to make changes on something that is and has been in place for years. Why? That’s my question. If you want to play in someone’s house, you play by their rules. I know of other archery clubs and chapters in other states, they don’t have these issues. Simple fix to me. Show up and support and shoot. We did it before WE can do it again. LM#111

So before anyone answers or questions anyone on anything:
Are you a Life member?
Are you a member of a Chapter or Club?
Do you get out and help schools or any NASP programs in the State?
Are you promoting BHA?
Have you got any new members to join BHA or a State Chapter or Club?
Are you helping or supporting any program anywhere in the State for BHA or Archery?

I hear about changes from folks at the past meeting that want to change the way that this organization was founded on. Most of them have not even been in BHA much more than 2 or 3 years. They probable can’t even tell you what or when on anything about BHA. Trying to make changes on something that is and has been in place for years. Why? That’s my question. If you want to play in someone’s house, you play by their rules. I know of other archery clubs and chapters in other states, they don’t have these issues. Simple fix to me. Show up and support and shoot. We did it before WE can do it again.

I applaud that long speech, but you dodged the question with a politicians broom. Where does the money from entry fees actually go? What makes BHA anything different than a weekend archery shoot?
Why would a club want to be a member of BHA, what makes giving BHA $5 per shooter that visits your club over the weekend worth it?
I’ll hang up and listen.

First let me ask you a couple of questions. I will not air all these things out on here for this is not the way to do it. But, my question to you is. Did you ask about that before you gave you money? Are you a member of a chapter or have friends that are? This website is full of Great information on questions that you ask. LOL You know I’m just poking at you.
